Brock Joins the Network for Scholars-At-Risk
Around the world today, scholars are attacked because of their words, their ideas and their place in society. Those seeking power and control work to limit access to information and new ideas by targeting scholars, restricting academic freedom and repressing research, publication, teaching and learning. The Scholars at Risk Network (SAR) is an international network of universities and colleges responding to these attacks. SAR promotes academic freedom and defends the human rights of scholars and their communities worldwide.
On Friday, June 22, SAR launched its Canada Section at Massey College, University of Toronto. Brock International visited Massey College to attend the opening event. The Honorable Lloyd Axowrthy, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Winnipeg offered a keynote and Charles Foran, President of PEN Canada also gave a lunchtime talk. Two scholars who came to Canada through SAR presented their experience and shared the challenges they had to face upon their arrivals. The opening event was a good opportunity to learn how SAR Network functions and how universities can become more involved.
