Brock International Speaker Series: Professor Cornelia Roux, Director of Research, North-West University, South Africa
Brock International in partnership with the Faculty of Education hosted Professor Cornelia Roux, Director of Research at North-West University, South Africa from Monday, July 19 to Friday July 23, 2010. As part of her visit Prof. Roux, delivered a talk at the Pond Inlet on Wednesday, July, 21. Speaking on religious rights, Prof. Roux described her involvement in a proposal of a bigger research project entitled: Human Rights Education in Diversity: Empowering girls in rural and metropolitan school environments 2010-2012 which is funded by the South Africa Netherlands Research Program on Alternatives in Development (SANPAD). In her presentation she spoke about the importance of listening to the “voices” of young girls in enforcing religious practices in South Africa.
A second presentation was given by Ms. May Al-Fartousi, a Phd student at the Faculty of Education, who gave an insightful talk on the topic, Using Critical Media Discourse: An Analysis of the Controversial Debate regarding Muslim Women Wearing Burqa in Canada. Her talk provided an insight into the differences in the practice of using the Burqa among Moslem women and discussed the recent political debate around the practice.
Both presentations had strong relevance to women in society today. Dr. Dolana Mogadime of the Faculty of Education, Brock academic host for Prof. Roux and Phd superviser for Ms. Al-Fartousi introduced both speakers at the event. Both presentations were followed by brief question and answer sessions, after which a light lunch was served during which guests’ engaged in discussions with speakers. The event was organised by Brock International with support from the Faculty of Education.
Prof. Roux also held meetings with senior university officials and members of the international community during the visit to discuss prospects of extending the already existing agreement between North-West University and Brock.
