University of Western Sydney visit - May 25th, 2012

On Friday May 25th, University of Western Sydney (UWS)visited Brock University. The purpose of the visit was learning about Brock University and our academic programs with a view to expanding existing collaborative activities. The origins of the UWS / Brock connection began with a close link between collaborators in Biological Sciences working on the study of cholesterol and it’s function in neurons.  The collaboration that began with Joffre Mercier (Associate Dean Research & Graduate Studies – Brock) and Jens Coorssen (Professor of Molecular Physiology – UWS) has recently resulted in a recent publication in a high-impact scientific journal and expanded into new collaborations among researchers in three different labs.  For example, they have also begun to collaborate with Glenn Tattersall (Associate Professor – Brock) who specializes in the study of thermoregulation in species. This interesting new connection will allow the researchers to investigate the cholesterol using other unique approaches and methods.  The attendee for the visit was:

Julie Lantz - Associate PVC (Engagement and International)

- She met with several different representatives from Brock University including:

Ms. Sheila Young, Director, Brock International
Dr. Neil McCartney, Dean of Applied Health Sciences
Ms. Colleen Hood, Chair, Recreation Leisure Studies
Ms. Kirsty Spence, Chair, Sport Management
Mr. Philip Sullivan, Chair of Kinesiology

Mr. Arthur Chen, Manager, International Services & Programs Abroad
Ms. Christina Bosilo, Manager, International Services & Programs Abroad
Ms. Liv Park, Scholar Services and Programs Assistant
Dr. Michael Plyley, Dean of Graduate Studies
Ms. Gail C. Pepper, Director, Graduate Studies
Dr. Thomas Dunk, Dean of Social Sciences
Dr. Ingrid Makus, Associate Dean, Graduate Studies & Research
Dr. Tom O’Neill, Chair, Child & Youth Studies
Dr. David Brown, Acting Chair, Tourism & Environment
Dr. Mike Ripmeester, Chair of Geography
Dr. Ejaz Ahmed, Dean of Mathematics and Science
Dr. Joffre Mercier, Associate Dean Research & Graduate Studies
Dr. Doug Bruce, Chair, Department of Biological Sciences
Dr. Jens Coorssen, University of Western Sydney
Professor Glenn Tattersall, Professor of Biological Sciences
Professor Gaynor Spencer, Professor of Biological Sciences
Ms. Christina Phillips, Faculty Advancement Officer
Ms. Lynn Rempel, Nursing

Day-long meetings and discussion focused on making other researcher-to-researcher connections in a range of areas including: Applied Health Sciences, Kinesiology, Nursing, Cultural Studies, Water Management & Economics, among others.  In the Sciences, discussion ensued around ways in which 4th year Honours students might exchange for work in the other institution’s labs on their research projects, benefitting the students’ experience and the collaboration researchers at Brock and UWS.  The day-long visit ended with a tour of the new Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex led by Dr. Mercier, showcasing the state-of-the-art research and lab facilities at Brock.
