Our Renaissance Begins Now!

Faculty of Humanities: Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MIWSFPA)

Our Renaissance Begins Now!

September 18th, 2015 marked the official opening of the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts' new facility in downtown St. Catharines at 15 Artists' Common. Formerly a 19th-century textile factory serving as part of the central core of the historic city, the new Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts' downtown home places our Departments of Dramatic Arts, Music, and Visual Arts, and the Centre for Studies in Arts and Culture right in the heart of the city's rebirth.

While the history of the building is important, it's exciting that it will be given new life with the talented students that will soon fill its classrooms and studios.

Our facility houses 50 full-time faculty members, part-time instructors and staff who will work towards accommodating the estimated 500 students in a school designed specifically with their needs in mind.

"Within our new building students have access to a number of exciting facilities including art studios, a framing shop and art stores, digital classrooms, music practice rooms, a stand-alone 235-seat theatre, wardrobe, design and scene shop, rehearsal rooms, learning commons and a student gallery — all the essential pedagogical elements that a dynamic school such as ours will need to continue flourishing in the future," said Derek Knight, the Director of the MIWSFPA.

The school is an exciting venture not only for the university and its students, but for the St. Catharines community as a whole. The project is a joint venture as both Brock and the city have worked together to create this multi-use arts complex that will connect the talent of its students with the needs of the community as well. Its goals are to revitalize downtown St. Catharines, stimulate the Niagara Region's economy, create new opportunities in the cultural sector and of course to train the next generation of talent.
